trackace diy laser wheel alignment tracking gauge. poor wheel alignment wastes fuel, damages tyres & increases your co2 emissions carbon emissions. trackace is a little gem that has been needed for years! hi, my name is terry grogan, creator of the trackace system. although originally developed to allow diy mechanics to justify owning their own laser accurate gauges trackace has proved popular across the board, from novices who just want to check their own alignment before paying out for adjustments to fine tuning alignment by dedicated motorsport enthusiasts. it’s no coincidence the retailers that have taken trackace straight into their product lines are motorsport suppliers. theses guys know their stuff and don’t waste time on anything that doesn’t work well. adjusting front wheel toe angles (tracking) is a very simple task, the only problem for diy mechanics was it required gauges that were expensive for occasional use and on the large side for home storage, so i set out to create a real but low cost compact solution. on checking out how all the commercial gauges work, i also discovered several accuracy problems that i wanted to overcome with a new system, i’m glad to say i solved them all. well now all the reviews are great, but with something new most of us take reviews with a pinch of salt and usually head off to search forums for opinions and reassurance before we part with our hard earned cash, after all how often does something suddenly appear that really does the job for a fraction of the price. i did think the trackace innovations were fairly obvious, but it seems not, there’s lots of misleading assumptions and myths out there about front wheel alignment and about the trackace system itself, even by some forum “experts”, so it’s time for this simple little kit to flex its innovative muscle. trackace is the most reliably accurate laser wheel alignment gauge available. trackace is a total toe angle gauge, all systems retailing up to around £1000 are total toe angle gauges. adjusting tracking is the same principle with trackace as with these gauges. you do not have to refer to the rear wheels to set front toe properly, it should be set central with the steering gear. if we were talking rear wheels then yes, you must set up with the front wheels, a rear wheel add-on kit from trackace is in the pipeline at no more cost than the front wheel kit, all with the same simple logical approach to accuracy. once available the add-on kit approach will offer most flexibility, for example, if your vehicle does not have adjustable rear wheels (many don't) you can opt for the front wheel only kit but retain the option to add the rear wheel kit should you change to a vehicle with adjustable rear wheels in the future. you do not have to contact half way up the wheels when measuring in degrees, unlike when measuring directly in mm's, but you do have to reference against a level plane through each wheel. go over £1000 you can get gauges that do refer to the rear wheels, this is to assist getting the steering central more quickly in a commercial environment where time is money, but you can centre the steering without any gauges at all. spend even more, you could go for a system that uses two lasers and two simple scales, again assists centring the steering, but the problem here is simple scales cannot be accurate for different sized vehicles. everything is only as accurate as its calibration. trackace is the only gauge that is calibrated at a much greater distance than its operating distance and automatically calibrated to this high standard at every use because it is an integral part of the checking procedure. to make it as clear as possible, a picture says a thousand words. so am i saying trackace is better than everything else? no! everything has its place and trackace fills a big gap for those on a budget who understand adjusting tracking using total toe angle gauges and those who just want to check front wheel alignment accurately. if i paid somone else to set wheel alignment using any system i would still want to take a few minutes to use a trackace to check it had been set correctly. am i saying its lower cost, more accurate, more compact and portable than everything else and there’s no trade off for all these benefits? no! there is a trade off, unlike most commercial systems trackace cannot be kept on the vehicle to guide adjustments. it’s check/adjust/check/adjust until correct, although with trackace ready to hand re-checks only take a minute or two and unless you have under vehicle access (a 4 post lift or pit) this would probably be the case no matter what gauges you were using. you also need extra work space to the front right hand side of the vehicle, one metre is plenty but a small garage will probably be out of the question. the direct wheel to wheel method means trackace is to wheel alignment measurement what a tape measure is to joinery or a spirit level is to bricklaying. the only real criticism from users has been “it’s a bit fiddly but you soon get used to it”, this refers to how sensitive it is when fine adjusting the beam to bang on zero at a long distance but of course this sensitivity is exactly what makes it so accurate. thanks for reading. you can read our whole site in 10 minutes, so why not get yourself up to speed on the subject of front wheel alignment. for home mechanics the trackace is almost too good to be true. most just could not justify spending hundreds £££’s on commercial gauges for their own use at home. with a trackace any competent home mechanic can check and adjust tracking themselves saving a small fortune in future rather than spending one. the trackace is one of the most accurate wheel alignment gauges available, and the most affordable laser gauge there is! now at £75.00 choosing quick, easy and laser accurate tracking checks at home is an easier decision to make. this graph clearly shows the shocking fuel wastage estimated for tracking errors up to 2 degrees. averaged results of tests carried out on a passenger car at 30 and 60 mph. data source us environmental protection agency. back to top
